Caramelized Onion Hummus

I am obsessed with perfecting my basic hummus recipe. I’ve figured out the key to perfectly smooth, creamy, whipped hummus but the flavour isn’t quite there.

Texture? Check.

Flavour? Still working on it.

I read the ingredients on some of my favourite hummus brands and try to replicate their recipes but it never ends up tasting quite the same. Don’t get me wrong; my hummus is good, just not amazing. I won’t settle for anything less than amazing.

But I’ve hit the mark on several hummus variations. Like this caramelized onion hummus.

Sooo delicious. It’s amazing, either with crackers or carrots.

Caramelized Onion Hummus

Caramelized Onion Hummus

A slightly sweet twist on the traditional hummus recipe.

  • 2 large onions
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 cans (3 cups chickpeas)
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • ¾ cup olive oil
  • ¼ cup sesame seeds
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  1. Once the onions are caramelized, place them and the rest of the ingredients in a high-powered blender (I am a huge fan of the vitamix!). Use the instructions for your blender. With the Vitamix, turn on low, crank up the dial, then flip the switch for high power. Use the tamper until the hummus is velvety smooth.

    Hey Jessica,

    I LOVED this hummus! I saw that Christine made it and thought I’d try it out. YUM! I made a bunch…..so I hope it freezes well 😉

      I’m glad you LOVED it! Unfortunately, I don’t have any experience with freezing hummus… we eat so much of it in our house that I can’t seem to keep up with making it!

    I made this recipe for a potluck I went to recently, it was so yummy! The caramelized onions add that delicious delicate sweet flavour, so good! I used no added salt canned chickpeas so I added a bit more salt than the recipe called for. I will definitely make this recipe again!!
